Ama Sa! Good Day!
My name is Rikki and I believe every Indigenous family has their generational chain breaker. I'm doing my best to be that person, so follow along to watch me try, fail, learn and try again.
I don't believe in teaching without value, so I'll include my Friend link at the top of all my stories as I grow here on Medium 😊
A book worm my entire life; the Dewey decimal system was my best friend. Being there daily led to me reading books on paranormal, biographies, entrepreneurship, marketing, psychology, music and art, among other topics. I love fiction and non-fiction and used to read 10 novels a week. Then
I'm in love with technology and software. At 11 years old, I wrote an essay, by hand, to win a computer. Everything changed for me once I had access to home computer and dial-up internet in 2005. Once I learned how to utilize this "digital encyclopedia", the digital world was my oyster.
In 2006, I began teaching myself basic CSS & HTML. At the time it was called: fucking around on Piczo. I learned how to run a community of over 1000 people, this was called running a Guild. Other communities I've managed had over 70,000 subscribers as a faceless YouTuber.
I try out many tools, business models and analyze how things might be better done. I write my findings through the eyes of an entrepreneur. I'm not just here to affiliate market with some standard Wordpress, Shopify, ConvertKit tutorial to make a residual income. I like to present well researched and tested methods of building a digital business.
Being a self-trained professional had a Schrodinger effect on my work ethic: I work both insanely hard while having the laziest hobby. I am both the hardest working person that just sits on my computer all day long. I'm fine with that 2D perspective people might have on me because jobs never define me. How I react to people that don't see my value does. In 2009, during my first Entrepreneurship class exercise we were brainstorming business ideas. I blurted out an idea of what described a Digital Marketing Agency. At the time, I wanted to build simple done-for-you systems and teach local businesses how to use them for business growth. I think I might have been too ahead of my time, like my IT teacher was. My teachers didn't buy my ideas as "websites are just a digital business card". I believed them for a few years before I couldn't fool my head in the sand anymore.
Why REZ-ceptionist defines what I do, not who I am now. I chose the moniker "Rezceptionist" as a 19 year old, as a bit of a joke - I always would hear my parents complain that the receptionist wasn't picking up at the Band office. So when they couldn't get a call back, I'd go online and find them the information they had no luck Googling. So it's a pen name I fondly created as an inside joke with my mom and I. Us Gitxsan like to joke and laugh about everything, so this handle is my way of remembering a shared moment with my mama.
I've been the 'golden child' who wasted my "potential" my whole life. And that is okay. It was my journey to make. I lost myself somewhere in my 20s as I stopped believing I deserved to help anyone. I couldn't even help myself at that time. It's been excruciating to reassess that I'm not living how I want to live my life, so I'm giving myself permission to keep trying until I get it right.
